Celebrating
100 Years
Welcome Kathleen
At our November 16, 2023, fall meeting and luncheon, outgoing President Tatjana Keuper inducted the new officers for the 2024 season and passed the gavel, which dates back to 1932, to the incoming President Jenny Kitchen (TPC Potomac). The other officers are Vice President Helen Cox (Belle Haven), Secretary Renee Lyles (Trump National) and new to the Executive Committee Treasurer Kathleen Lubin. Kathleen is a member at River Bend Golf and Country Club and has been a member of the WDCGA for over 10 years. Her love of golf began early and she played for her college team. She recently retired from the classroom as a math teacher. Kathleen now has the time to develop her online golf attire business and volunteer with the WDCGA.
Presentation by Kate Schanuel
Our luncheon speaker was Kate Schanuel, Georgetown University’s Women’s Golf Head Coach. She spoke informatively about the fifty-year history of Title IX (the subject of her dissertation) and its impact on her career and on women’s golf primarily at the college level. This led our members who were in high school and college in the 1970’s to relate their experiences with their schools’ support–or lack of support–for women’s golf before and after Title IX. Kate noted that our membership provided a great sample of the impact of Title IX by comparing the experiences of those who played college golf in the 1970s to the experiences of those who played in subsequent decades. Kate concluded that Title IX greatly aided the growth of women’s golf in schools but the big hurdle, which Title IX cannot solve, is the retention of young women golfers.
